Agent Persona Builder

Generate professional agent personas in seconds using characteristics selection.

The Agent Persona Builder helps you create effective agent personas without writing prompts from scratch.

Getting Started

  1. Navigate to Agents and create or edit an agent
  2. Click Generate next to the Agent Persona field
  3. The Agent Persona Builder panel slides open with three tabs

Builder Tabs

Custom Build

Create a unique persona by selecting characteristics across 5 categories:

Category Navigation:

  • Click any category header to expand or collapse it
  • Each category contains multiple fields with dropdown options
  • Selected options are highlighted

Reset Button: Click Reset in the Custom Build section to restore all defaults.

Response Behavior

Control how responses are structured:

  • Format — Conversational, Step-by-Step Guides, or Technical Documentation
  • Proactivity — Whether agent suggests related topics
  • Question Handling — How agent asks for clarification

Operational Boundaries

Set guardrails for your agent:

  • Scope Strictness — How strictly agent stays within documented topics
  • Escalation — When to suggest contacting human support
  • Out-of-scope Handling — How to respond to off-topic questions

Knowledge Integration

Configure how agent uses your documents:

  • Citation Style — Whether to reference specific documents
  • Uncertainty Handling — How to respond when unsure

Use Preset

Load pre-configured personas for common use cases:

  • System Templates — Platform-provided presets optimized for specific roles
  • My Templates — Presets saved by your organization’s admins

Using a Preset:

  1. Click the Use Preset tab
  2. Browse available presets
  3. Click on a preset to select it
  4. The preset loads into Custom Build tab
  5. Adjust any characteristics if needed
  6. Click Generate Persona

Platform Rules

View the read-only guardrails automatically applied to all agents:

  • No fabrication — Won’t invent facts, numbers, or dates not in your content
  • Acknowledges gaps — Says “I don’t have that information” rather than guessing
  • Resists speculation — Won’t estimate missing values even when asked
  • No professional impersonation — Won’t role-play as attorneys, doctors, CPAs, or financial advisors
  • Corrects false premises — Points out incorrect assumptions before answering
  • Blocks harmful content — Refuses self-harm, explicit, or fraudulent content

Platform rules ensure all agents behave reliably and safely, regardless of persona configuration. They cannot be disabled.

Generating a Persona

Before Generation: The panel shows your configuration options at full width.

Generate Button: When on the Custom Build tab:

  1. Click Generate Persona at the bottom
  2. A loading state shows while generating
  3. Takes a few seconds

After Generation: The panel layout changes to a split view:

  • Left side: Your configuration options
  • Right side: Generated prompt preview

Preview Panel Features:

  • Full text of the generated system prompt
  • Editable — you can modify the text directly
  • Character count displayed at the bottom

After Generating

Once you have a generated persona, you have several options:

Regenerate

Click Regenerate to create a new version with the same settings. Each generation produces slightly different results.

Edit the Prompt

Click in the preview panel to edit the generated text directly. Make any adjustments needed for your specific use case.

Save as Preset

Click Save as Preset to save your configuration for reuse:

  1. Dialog opens asking for preset name
  2. Enter a descriptive name
  3. The preset saves to your organization under My Templates

Saved presets are available to all admins in your organization. Use them to maintain consistent agent personalities across multiple agents.

Apply to Agent

Click Apply to Agent to use this persona:

  1. The prompt is inserted into your agent’s system prompt field
  2. The builder closes
  3. Continue configuring other agent settings

Best Practices

  • Start with a preset — Use system templates as a starting point, then customize
  • Match role to purpose — Choose a role that aligns with your agent’s actual function
  • Balance verbosity — Concise works better for quick Q&A, detailed for complex topics
  • Test after generating — Always test your agent in the Playground after applying a new persona
  • Iterate — Regenerate with different settings if results aren’t quite right
  • Keep it focused — Overly complex prompts can confuse the agent
