Usage & Credits
Understand how credits work and monitor your consumption.
Credit System
Cuneiform Chat uses credits (called Platform Credits) to measure usage:
- AI queries — When your agents answer questions
- Document processing — When documents are uploaded and indexed
- Embeddings — Vector generation for search
How Credits Are Used
AI Queries
Each time your agent answers a question:
- Credits are consumed based on the AI model used
- Longer responses may use slightly more credits
- Failed queries don’t consume credits
Document Processing
When you upload documents:
- Credits are used to extract and process content
- Larger documents use more credits
- Re-processing uses additional credits
Viewing Usage
Access your usage from Billing in the sidebar:
- Current period usage — Credits used this billing cycle
- Remaining credits — Available credits
- Usage percentage — Visual progress bar showing consumption
Monitoring Usage
Usage Display
The billing page shows:
- Credits used vs. allocated
- Usage percentage with visual progress bar
- Status indicator (normal, warning, exceeded, blocked)
Usage Warnings
The platform automatically displays warnings as you approach your limits:
| Threshold | What Happens |
|---|---|
| ~80% used | Warning banner appears in Billing page |
| 100% used | ”Limit Reached” banner with upgrade prompt |
| Blocked | Service paused until next period or upgrade |
These warnings appear automatically — no configuration needed.
Review your usage weekly to catch unexpected spikes early and optimize as needed.

What Happens at Limits
Approaching Limits
As you near your credit limit, warning banners appear in the Billing page prompting you to upgrade or enable extra usage.
Exceeding Limits
When you exceed your monthly quota:
- A warning banner indicates “Limit Reached”
- Enable Extra Usage to continue without waiting
- Or upgrade your plan for more monthly credits
Blocked State
If extra usage balance is also depleted:
- Service pauses until your next credit period (credits are re-granted about every 30 days)
- Or add funds to your extra usage balance
Extra Usage
Extra usage lets you continue using the service when your monthly quota runs out.
Enabling Extra Usage
- Go to Billing
- Find the Extra Usage section
- Toggle to enable
- Complete the initial top-up (minimum $10)
Managing Extra Usage
Once enabled, you can:
- View balance — See your available extra usage funds
- Add funds — Top up your balance (500 per transaction)
- Set spending cap — Limit extra usage spending per credit period, i.e. roughly monthly (500)
How Extra Usage Works
- Charges are deducted from your extra usage balance
- Usage stops when you reach your spending cap
- Balance carries over between periods; only the spending cap resets
- Cannot be disabled once enabled (use spending cap to limit)
Extra usage is only available for paid plans (Starter, Plus, and Enterprise).
Credit Period
- Credits reset at the start of each credit period — roughly every 30 days, on every billing cadence
- Your credit renewal date and your next charge date are both shown on the Billing page. They are the same date on a monthly plan; on a longer term the charge date can be much further out
- Unused credits do not roll over
